1. Always make sure you evaluate the freight forwarding company.
Check to see if they have an OTI license. You can check for
this at the Federal Maritime Commission website located at
http://www2.fmc.gov/oti/nvos_listing.asp.
2. Dont ship your balikbayan box using a company with
an unknown background. Thoroughly check the companys
profile and history. Research information using the internet
and other sources; ask for testimonials from customers who
have used the service. Also, check for complaints through
the Better Business Bureau. Some companies make a lot of promises
about safety and delivery intervals, but fail to deliver on
those promises.
3. Do your own calculations - You can avoid paying higher
shipping costs by checking the rates and dimension of the
box. Some companies will charge you rates based on their regular-sized
box when the box you are shipping is smaller.
4. Do complete all the necessary paperwork including the
Shippers Export Declaration and packing list forms.
Your agent should be able to assist you by answering any questions
you may have with regard to completion of these documents.
5. Know your rights. Check the terms and condition printed
at the back of your shipping documents.
6. Dont let the agent leave without giving you a signed
copy of the invoice. Your invoice is your proof that you sent
your box through that company. Make sure they put the correct
amount on the invoice before he or she extracts your copy.
Some agents write the amount only on your copy of the invoice.
Be careful and avoid companies who use this practice.
7. Do ask the agent for information. Ask about promotions
or incentive programs. Often times you can save some of your
hard-earned money if the company participates in regular promotions.
This gives you something back and makes it more economical
for you.
8. Do check to see if the company has a website. Does their
website have a tracking system that will allow you track your
shipment? Does their website allow you to print labels? Schedule
shipments? Pay online?
9. If you did your homework, research, and checked the company
to make sure they were licensed and bonded, you can be assured
that your shipment is safe.
10. Reasonable shipping intervals are between 30 and 45 days.
Call the consignee from time to time to check if your cargo
has arrived.
11. Do get a corporate telephone number from the agent. If
you encounter a problem, it is often better to call the corporate
office directly. In most cases, they are in a better position
and have more information at their disposal than your local
agent.
